Elf (2003) has been out for 19 years now, but it became a holiday classic instantly, lighting up homes and hearts worldwide. The movie follows the journey of Buddy The Elf (Will Ferrell), who was adopted by elves and raised in the North Pole. Now an adult, Buddy finally realizes he’s not truly an elf, but a human. Consequently, Buddy embarks on a journey to find his dad (James Caan) in New York City, but it’s a lot different than the North Pole, the only home he’s ever truly known.

I’ve been watching this movie every holiday season for my entire life; just like everyone else, I absolutely love it. As I’ve grown older, I haven’t sat down to watch the whole thing. I’ve caught bits and pieces and have been satisfied with that since I’ve seen this movie so many times I could quote it in my sleep. My holiday seasons were void of the Elf-watching experience up until a few nights ago. I sat down and watched the entirety of Elf with my little brother, but I didn’t expect to come to the realization that I’d never see this cheerful, cult-classic Christmas film the same way ever again.

When Buddy gets to New York City, he is immediately an odd one out. However, the beautiful thing about cities is that in a way everybody’s the odd one out in the eyes of an opposite stranger, so before…
